The School House Gallery opened in February 2017. The gallery gets its name from the space's original purpose - a school. The Country Life Academy was started in 1912 as a way for students to learn a sustainable lifestyle from their surroundings, including agriculture, rural education, and rural homemaking. Fast forward several years, the building was expanded in order to support a growing textile mill industry in Star. Once the industry left town, the building sat empty with so much potential. STARworks was gifted the building in 2005 and began its mission to engage the community with artwork and artists of the highest caliber. Renovations began soon after to repair the building, creating space for artist studios and ultimately expose the original brick school building that was hiding in the center of this industrial space. The School House Gallery now welcomes visitors through the original school entrance to a space where they can purchase handmade local wares including functional tableware, sculpture, and home decor.
